We have outlined a few guidelines you can follow to guard yourself and limit your exposure to tick bites:
- Wear a DEET insect repellent on exposed skin or clothing.
- Wear light-colored clothes to spot ticks, long sleeves, and long pants tucked adequately into socks or boots.
- When outdoors, stay on trails and avoid walking in areas of long grass and plants
- Make sure to thoroughly check your full body once you get home from the trek. You may want to accurately monitor your toes, knees, groin, armpits, and scalp. In case you take your pets on a trek, make sure to check your pets, too.
- Be sure to mow the long grass short to keep ticks away and clean unnecessary clutter, such as fallen leaves and woodpiles, away from your property.
Things to do when you find a tick on yourself:
- Make sure to get rid of the tick as quickly as possible. If this isn’t removed, the risk of Lyme disease spreading in your body increases many folds.
- Keep tweezers and tick keys handy. You can use any of these to grasp the tick’s head as close to the skin as possible and pull it out slowly.
- On removing the tick, use soap or a disinfectant to clean the bite area, and then apply an antiseptic cream.
- It is better to see a doctor if you’re unsure how long the tick has been on your body or if it’s been at least 24 hours.
We at Accurate Pest Control believe that one of Lyme disease’s most common early signs is an expanding skin rash that looks like a “bull’s eye.” If you see this rash on your skin or see any symptoms appearing within a few days/weeks after being bitten by a tick, we advise you to consult your concerned healthcare professional.
